When Tempest arrives, the group evade her aboard a delivery airship run by birdlike pirates, whom Rainbow Dash persuades to take them to the hippogriffs' kingdom on Mount Aris. In celebration, Rainbow Dash performs a Sonic Rainboom that inadvertently gives their location away to Tempest, forcing the group to reach Mount Aris in a makeshift hot air balloon.
While exploring the deserted kingdom, the ponies are saved from drowning in an underwater cavern by the seapony Princess Skystar, who leads them to her undersea home of Seaquestria. Skystar identifies her kind as the hippogriffs, transformed by a magic pearl used by her mother, Queen Novo, to hide from the Storm King. When Novo denies them the pearl to use against the Storm King, Twilight desperately attempts to steal it while letting her friends unknowingly distract the seaponies.
Her plan backfires when she triggers an alarm, prompting the outraged queen to banish the entire group to the surface. Twilight is rebuked by her friends for her actions, resulting in them leaving her after an argument. Twilight is kidnapped by Tempest, who gains her sympathy after revealing how the loss of her horn caused her own friends to shun her for her dangerously unstable magic as a filly.
After Spike alerts the ponies to Twilight's capture, they are joined by Capper, the pirates, and Skystar to help them return to Canterlot and rescue her. Tempest delivers Twilight to the Storm King, who absorbs her and the other princesses' magic into his staff. When Twilight's friends infiltrate the city and defeat the Storm King's guards, he conjures a tornado with the staff, betraying Tempest as well.
Twilight saves Tempest and reconciles with her friends, who help her take the staff and end the storm. The Storm King hurls a magical orb at the group to petrify them, but Tempest jumps in his way, turning them both into stone. The Storm King's body falls and shatters, while the group use the staff's magic to revive Tempest, who restores the princesses and the damaged city by returning the stolen magic. The Friendship Festival resumes, and the ponies celebrate with all of the allies Twilight's group have made on their adventure.
Encouraged by Twilight, Tempest joins in by producing a fireworks display with her broken horn, and happily accepts the group's friendship. Nicole Oliver, St. Germain also voices Granny Smith, Applejack's grandmother, and Muffins, a cross-eyed gray pegasus. Voice acting is uniformly excellent, with a mix of prolific voice actors and not-so-prolific.
A standout is Emily Blunt's superb Tempest, both menacing and heartfelt. Overall, could have been a little better but it is well worth galloping along for the ride.
Princess Twilight Sparkle is organising a Friendship Festival when wicked Tempest Shadow invades with her monstery things with a view to conquering Equestria for the Storm King.
Twilight Sparkle escapes with assorted friends, stuff happens, and - spoiler - the day is saved. This animated feature is based on a TV series which is based on a series of toys. It is aimed solidly at little girls: I am a grumpy old man, clearly not part of the target audience.
My jaundiced comments should be read with that in mind. This is awful. There is a great A list voice cast - Emily Blunt, Zoe Saldana, Kristen Chenoweth, Michael Pena - and they are voicing pastel coloured magic flying ponies with sickly twee names. All that is OK, that's the playground we're playing in.
It's so sugary that it might tweak up your diabetes, but you knew that going in. What is less forgiveable is the underwhelming character and background design, the barely acceptable animation, and the way so much of the inspiration, especially for the songs, is lifted from other, much better films, I sat there the only adult in a cinema full of no-one else ticking off mental check boxes of the films which have been shamelessly rifled.
I don't suppose 5 year old girls will mind in the slightest. As a brony, I think this movie could have been better. The main flaw is that it doesn't even primarily take place in Equestria.
Another flaw is that it focuses on barely any of the other characters apart from the Mane 6. I really wanted to see Princess Celestia play a bigger part, but instead she barely appears. I still liked the gorgeous animation in this movie and I am glad that the film was made. This is one of the first traditionally animated films released in mainstream theaters in a long time. I hope we get to see more popular animated shows like "Adventure Time" and "Rick And Morty" get theatrical films like this.
This film was rated PG for mild action. That's just ridiculous. There is absolutely no reason why this film shouldn't have been rated G. I did like the Tempest character especially with the broken horn design. Sadly, the Storm King is pretty shallow for a villain.
